Interview: Mark Spencer, Founder Digium & Asterisk

MAUG: Mark, Thank you for taking off some time of your busy schedule to answer some of our questions. So how has Asterisk been growing in the market place over last yearMark Spencer, Founder Digium & Asterisk

Mark: It has been growing in a variety of markets, especially we have heard more recently of enterprise applications, and especially outside the United States.

MAUG: What’s your strategy to break beyond the mid-market companies into  Enterprise market

Mark: This is largely happening naturally.  Enterprises are self-selecting to want to run Asterisk, and we are working on determining which products are the most important to offer to them, as well as how to adapt our existing products and services to meet the needs of Enterprises as well.

MAUG: What do you think are the top two reasons why more people don’t adopt open source solutions

Mark: I think there is still a perception (enforced by the established players of course) that open source means there is no support available.  Digium through its partners leverages the open source development and marketing models to supply a product to enterprises which can meet their needs more flexibly than traditional solutions while offering a level of support and independence that is not available from proprietary vendors.

Load-Balance Asterisk with UltraMonkey

Heya Maugers,

Dr. Daniel from Intuit Innovation Sdn Bhd has released a very cool tutorial on how to load balance Asterisk using Ultramonkey to create High End Enterprise Ultra Scalable Asterisk Solutions… what a loooong word.

——————————————————————————————————————————————-

I wrote a small Tutorial on how to load balance Asterisk servers. The tutorial takes care of the load balancing with UltraMonkey but does not touch ARA (Asterisk Real Time Architecture).

We deployed such systems many times for large setups with multiple Asterisk Gateway servers.

This is a one of our standard setups:

This solution works like a charm and we can avoid to use openSER. The Tutorial is based on Debian 4 R5 systems. What we believe is the best OS for Asterisk anyway… smile :-)

Here you can download the tutorial: asteriskultramonkey.pdf

Cheers

Interview: Mr. Oliver Wittig, Vice President Sales EMEA, SNOM Technology AG

Hi Maug’ers, we are here together with Mr. Oliver Wittig, he is the Vice President EMEA for SNOM Technologies AG the Manufacturer of SNOM IP-Phones.

Oliver thank you for taking the time of your busy schedule

Oliver Wittig - VP Sales EMEA, Snom Technologies AG

Oliver Wittig - VP Sales EMEA, Snom Technologies AG

MAUG: Oliver thank you for taking the time of your busy schedule please Tell us a little about SNOM and how it all Started?

Oliver: snom technology AG develops and manufactures Voice-over-IP telephones and other related equipment based on the IETF open standard SIP (Session Initiation Protocol). SNOM’s product lines include secure, feature-rich SIP telephones engineered for small and medium-sized business, ISP (Internet Service Provider) and VoIP carrier markets, OEM customers, home office and consumer applications. With its current Headquarter based in Berlin, Germany, snom’s global sales network extends to over 40 countries.

MAUG: SNOM is well know in Europe of course how about in other markets?

Oliver: Asia is still a newer market to us so the branding is still on the weaker side. In the US, Africa, Middle East, Australia snom is loved as much as in Europe and has increasing popularity.

MAUG: What about the Asian Market? We are flooded by cheap China Made IP Phones that cost less than 50 USD. How do you think will SNOM be able to position itself to gain some market share in Asia?

Oliver: We think that is a matter of perspective since a 50USD phones is not really cheap if you add all the trouble shooting and integration costs that come alongside a project. Quite a few big projects rejected a lot of Asian imports after not getting it them to fully run in the earlier days. Still China made Phones are getting more competitive and the quality is improving. In the early days phones wouldn’t even register.

Customer Expectations regarding the features a business VoIP phone should have has grown over the past years. IP-phones that just provide a minimum service level or features are frowned upon. Regarding characteristics like stability and quality, snom has been certainly one of the most versatile phone producers in the market and continues to be. One example is the snom OCS edition. Snom offers the only SIP standard phone which can combine SIP high level features with Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2 Unified communication solutions, this is truly unique in the world.
